Kathryn Kenley-Johnson, PhD, MPH, is a policy analyst and sociologist who focuses on women’s and gender studies and social movements. She has worked in higher education at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, the UC Office of the President, and San Francisco State University, centering her work on racial and gender equity, “relevant” undergraduate education, and stronger university–community ties. Her PhD dissertation explores how Bay Area second wave feminists carried their beliefs into everyday life over their lifetimes. Kathryn is a member of the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee and San Franciscans for an Independent Women’s Commission, and is the organizer of Seniors for Sanctuary, a weekly vigil at Mission and Silver supporting immigrant communities facing ICE. Her leadership has been recognized by the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, San Francisco State University’s Department of Women and Gender Studies, and the California State Senate. Kathryn is currently working on a hybrid memoir about the rise of the political right, its impact on women, and her own history as a second wave feminist, as well as a personal essay about her relationship with her mother, “Till Death Do Us Part (and Not Even Then).” She lives in San Francisco. Through lectures and classes, she hopes to develop a personal voice (as distinct from academic training) and grow as a writer.
