Joanne Furio

Joanne Furio is writer of creative nonfiction whose personal and hybrid essays, author interviews and flash have been published in Believer, Catapult, Craft Literary, Juked, Panoply, Open: Journal of Arts and Letters, Cumberland River Review and Weber: The Contemporary West, among other publications. A former New Yorker, she is also an award-winning arts and culture journalist at Berkeleyside, where she does the books coverage and writes feature stories. Before that she was a contributing writer at San Francisco magazine for a decade and over the years has written regularly for such publications as The New York Times, Ms., New York magazine and Dwell. Joanne teaches writing through the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, her alma mater, and Poets & Writers. Since 2017 she has taught undergrads at Saint Mary's College of California, where she was awarded a teaching fellowship and received an MFA in creative writing in 2016. She lives in Berkeley, California.
