Janine Kovac writes about power dynamics and women’s bodies. Before writing, Janine enjoyed a 12-year career as a ballet dancer in Italy, Iceland, San Francisco, and in her hometown of El Paso, Texas. She is the author of three books: Brain Changer: A Mother's Guide to Cognitive Science; Spinning: Choreography for Coming Home; and The Nutcracker Chronicles: A Fairytale Memoir. She has been published in Salon, Writer's Digest, Publishers Weekly, the New Ohio Review, The Bellingham Review, and elsewhere. Her distinction include the Elizabeth George Foundation Fellowship from Hedgebrook, The Calderwood Fellowship for Journalism from MacDowell, and San Francisco Foundation/Nomadic Press Award for Literary Nonfiction. Her fiction is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas. As a literary citizen, Janine is the co-director for Litquake's Lit Crawl, the curator of Grotto Night with San Francisco Public Library, and the co-curator of Aloud/Out Loud at Telegraph Hill Books. Janine hosts write-ins for Mesa Refuge and at Oakland Peace Center. She is an alumna of Hedgebrook, Mesa Refuge, the Mineral School and is a MacDowell Fellow.Since 2014 Janine has taught Scrivener workshops to writers of all levels for organizations such as The Writers Grotto, Hugo House, Page Street, The Unicorn Author Club and through private consultations.
