Carly Stern

Carly is an independent journalist who writes about how social determinants of health shape people’s lives. She often covers the intersection of issues like housing, health care and economic security. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian US, The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle and California Health Report, among others. She is a research editor for Air Mail and has taught workshops on the business of freelancing at Duke University, her alma mater. Carly also works as a developmental and line editor for clients. Her work has been supported by the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, the Fuller Project and the Journalists in Aging Fellows program, and she has won several San Francisco Press Club Awards. She enjoys painting, drawing, skiing, soccer, running and exploring California nature.
